LSS

• Who comes

School students in Matric, FSc, O and A levels, in delegations of 3 to 5. Students from outside Lahore stay in the campus hostels.

• One stream, one paper

Each team works in one stream, such as life sciences or autonomous systems, with a mentor. Over the event it drafts a research paper or a project proposal, and the mentors review it partway through.

• Workshops in between

Between stream sessions there are workshops, from research ethics to mathematical proof, talks from guest speakers, and a social one evening.

• Presenting it

On the last day each team presents its paper and takes questions. The best go through to a public final in front of a jury of faculty, and each stream has a winner.

School research teams spent 4 days on campus, in 4 streams: data science, autonomous systems, life sciences and sustainable physics. Every team worked through the same steps (empathise, define, ideate, prototype, present) and was judged on ethics and real-world use as well as on the science.

• Ethics in STEM

Teams read a controversial research paper, took sides on it, and proposed a better version that answered the other side's concerns.

• Greentech engineering

Life sciences meets autonomous systems. Teams were handed an environmental crisis and designed a device to deal with it, justifying every part.

• Women in STEM

A workshop and an all-female round on the gaps in research on women's health. Teams picked one gap and presented on what is known and what is missing.

• Mentors, then a jury

Mentors reviewed every paper midway. On the last day teams presented to their stream leads, and the best faced a jury of faculty in a public final.
